Mike Groshek, 46, watched his dream of playing football for Michigan State unravel when he injured his back. Now, thanks to Pilates and a new career in the industry, he's no longer sidelined.
I was always a very active and athletic kid growing up in Flint, MI. My father was a doctor and my mother was a housewife, and I was shagging balls from the time I could walk. Just about every sport came easily to me, and in high school, I was on the varsity basketball, baseball and football teams. I loved sports, and they kept me out of trouble.
My dream was to play football for my favorite team, Michigan State University, but after high school, I joined the army to become a combat medic instead of heading directly to college. My father was a Marine and a physician, and I felt it was a way to honor him but still forge my own path.
